Set in a Tuscan hill town in Italy, Ann Cornelisen's novel is a spirited, elegant, and extremely funny romp that grows out of the social mores of present-day Italy. The four central characters - English and American women, all expatriates, all independent and absorbed in their careers - are exasperated and amused by the Italian macho notion that there are some things women won't do: such as commit a crime (unless, of course, it be a crime to passion). To prove the fallacy, they concoct a scheme to rob a train carrying a huge government payroll.
At first, it is a kind of joke to pass the time; then, it becomes a case of "let's do it" rather than "what if we did?", and the action accelerates at a pace that surprises the would-be criminals themselves. To be sure, they succeed; but then the trouble begins. This is a glorious entertainment, and something more. A sense of humor proves to be the author's most formidable weapon in puncturing the quant social attitudes of the country she knows so well and regards with an affectionate but undeceived gaze.


This book is still in good condition.
There is some staining on the very edges of the pages.
Pages are still tight.
