In the summer of 1955, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas started on a trip that was to take him to the farthest corners of the Soviet Union. This book is a firsthand report of what he saw and felt as he traveled across the largest nation in the world.
The southern part of the U.S.S.R. (around and east of the Caspian Sea) is Russia's colonial empire. These wild, agriculturally rich states, whose topography is not unlike that of our own Southwest, were conquered by the Czar during the last century both to provide a barrier against British India and to replace the United States as Russia's chief source of cotton. It was here, where the Communist program of collectivization met violent resistance from people who have never considered themselves "Russian," that Justice Douglas started his journey.
Subsequently traveling through the heart of industrialized Russia and then through the vast farms and steppes of Soviet Asia, Justice Douglas gives a discerning and unprejudiced report of what he saw and learned about Russia and its people. Clearly and fascinatingly written by a famous jurist, traveler, writer, and observer. Russian Journey is an important and timely addition to our understanding of the Soviet world.

Pages are still tight.
Covers and edges show signs of wear.
The dust jacket has saw better days. It has lots of tears and missing pieces. It is also discolored in areas.
