A haze of brushed mohair rises off a long, richly textured winter scarf.

This chunky-textured statement scarf is built mostly from a soft, fluffy polyamide yarn, threaded through with merino wool, mohair, silk and a little polyester. Hand-crocheted stitch by stitch, it comes out 184 cm (72.4 in) long and 20 cm (7.9 in) wide. That is long enough to wrap generously around the neck and drape loose at the ends.

WHAT GOES INTO IT

Eleven to fourteen hours, and most of it goes into holding five yarns together as one even strand.
Every centimetre of the 184 cm length is worked by hand, one stitch at a time - let the tension slip anywhere along the way and it shows.
This scarf is fifty-five percent polyamide, carried alongside merino, mohair, silk and polyester, and it is priced for what it is.
One scarf, one dye lot, 20 cm wide - there is no second run to spread those hours across.

HOW IT FEELS

The surface is soft and slightly hazy under the fingers, the brushed mohair sitting up rather than lying flat.
The polyamide underneath keeps the weight down, so 184 cm of scarf does not pull on the neck.
It has more give than density - warmth you wear, not warmth you carry.
Expect a little shedding in the first week or two as the brushed fibres settle; that eases with wear.

I print the full split, synthetic and natural side by side. The polyamide is more than half of this scarf, and that belongs on the label, not hidden under the wool.

I do not restock and I do not repeat a colourway - partly by choice, partly because the yarn came from one dye lot and that lot is finished.

CARE

Hand wash only, lukewarm, pH-neutral wool detergent.
Squeeze gently, like kneading dough. Do not wring, twist or pull.
Dry flat on a towel, away from sun and radiators.
Brushed yarn sheds a little for the first week or two. That is the halo settling, not a fault. Shake it out and it stops.
If small bobbles appear where it rubs, lift them with a knitwear comb - never a razor.
Store folded and clean. Moths go for skin oils, not for the fibre, so put it away washed. Cedar in the drawer, not mothballs.
