ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Vincent van Gogh loved this print so much he painted a full copy of it in oils in 1887. What obsessed him was the composition no European painter would dare: the plum tree's trunk slammed right in front of your face, the garden seen THROUGH it. In Japan we call this technique "kore wa chikai" framing — the near and the far pressed into one breath.

The sunset pink behind white plum blossoms marks early spring in old Edo, when people traveled across the city just to smell these trees.
