ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The Naruto strait really does this — twice a day, tides force the sea through a narrow channel and it coils into whirlpools you can hear from the shore. Hiroshige turned that roar into a calm, almost decorative pattern of spirals. This is a very Japanese move: taking something dangerous and finding the design inside it.
