ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A fox dances upright with a leaf on its head - in Japanese folklore, foxes (kitsune) are shapeshifters, and a leaf on the head is the moment of transformation. Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was the great master of shin-hanga animal prints, beloved in the West even during his lifetime. His animals are never cartoons: this fox is caught mid-magic, humorous and slightly eerie at once.
