Any flag is just a symbol, yet flags are among the most powerful symbols in man's history. Millions of men have died for the nations or ideals their flags have symbolized. Yet hundreds, perhaps thousands, of men have died when nothing more important was involved than the few square feet of bunting itself.
The flag was developed as a substitute for a three-dimensional symbol. Earlier warriors erected totems at their headquarters, or carried them on staffs when going into battle. A Roman legion carried a small carved eagle at its head when marching. Later, representations of the symbols were painted on cloth and the cloth suspended from two poles lashed together as a T.
Eventually flags evolved for the different chieftains, and thus the flag of a king became the flag of a nation. When the American colonists rebelled against England, many flags were developed by different patriots. This is the story of how Old Glory emerged from the many, and officially became the Flag of the United States of America.

This book is still in good condition.
It is a former library book so it still has things on it that a library book would have.
Pages are still tight.
Covers and edges show signs of wear.
The dust jacket still has the plastic on it from the library. Both show signs of wear.
