River Red Gum Seeds — Eucalyptus camaldulensis

This packet contains 200 seeds of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, the river red gum. It is an Australian tree known for a substantial mature canopy and bark that sheds in patches or strips. It should be planned as a full-sized tree, with local climate, root space and distance from structures considered before planting. Seeds are supplied; no plants are included.

Sowing

Use a clean tray or small pots filled with fine, free-draining seed compost. Scatter the small seeds thinly over the surface, press them into contact and add only a very light covering. Water from below or with a fine spray to avoid displacement. Keep the medium evenly moist, bright and well ventilated without leaving it saturated. Australian National Botanic Gardens guidance notes that eucalypt seed is generally sown near the surface; species responses and germination timing can vary.

Care

Thin crowded seedlings early and pot them on carefully once large enough to handle. Increase sun exposure gradually. Water young plants during establishment, allowing excess water to drain freely. Where the climate is unsuitable for permanent outdoor growth, maintain seedlings under protected conditions. Before ground planting, check local advice regarding hardiness, fire-wise landscaping, invasive status and the space required by a large tree. A container does not make the species naturally dwarf.

Storage

Keep unused seed labelled and tightly closed in a cool, dry, dark place. Protect it from moisture, heat and repeated temperature changes.
