Himalayan Walnut Seeds — Juglans regia

This packet contains 5 seeds of Juglans regia, the English or Persian walnut. It is a large, long-lived deciduous tree, so choose a permanent site with enough room for its mature crown and root system. These are seeds, not seedlings or grafted trees. Seed-grown walnuts are genetically variable and should not be expected to reproduce every characteristic of a particular parent tree.

Preparing and sowing

Walnut seed normally needs a period of cold, moist conditions before spring germination. Mix the seeds with barely moist sand or another clean, free-draining medium and refrigerate them for about two months, checking periodically to prevent drying or waterlogging. Where winters are reliably cold, seeds may instead be sown outdoors in autumn in a protected nursery bed or deep container. Protect the sowing from rodents.

After chilling, sow each seed in a deep pot or prepared bed with well-drained soil. Cover it with several centimetres of medium, water gently, and keep the soil evenly moist while temperatures warm. Germination timing can vary among individual seeds.

Growing on

Place young plants in bright light and gradually acclimatise them to full sun. Avoid leaving developing taproots confined in shallow containers. Transplant while young into deep, fertile, well-drained soil, taking care not to damage the root. Water during establishment, but do not keep the root zone saturated.

Store unsown seeds cool, dry and labelled until stratification begins.
