Citronella Geranium (Pelargonium citrosum), commonly known as the Mosquito Plant, is an attractive perennial prized for its deeply cut, aromatic foliage with a fresh citrus-like fragrance and clusters of soft lavender-pink flowers. Its lush growth and ornamental leaves make it an excellent addition to containers, patios, balconies, borders, herb gardens, and cottage gardens.
Citronella Geranium thrives in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Easy to grow and well suited for containers, it is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a fragrant and decorative foliage plant.
Growing Instructions
- Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds about ⅛ inch (3 mm) deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Maintain temperatures between 70–75°F (21–24°C) and keep the soil evenly moist. Germination typically occurs within 7–21 days.
- Transplant seedlings into individual pots after several true leaves develop, then move outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Space plants 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart.
- Grow in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings once plants are established.
- Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage dense branching and maintain a full, compact shape.
