A Gantt chart that also tells you who is double-booked.

Microsoft Project is overkill for most plans, and a hand-drawn Excel bar chart tells you when work happens but not whether you can actually staff it. This does both, and it takes about a minute to learn.

HOW IT WORKS
You do not enter start and end dates. You type, in the grid, how many people each task needs in each period. From that the model draws the bar, and works out the start date, the finish date, the duration, the peak headcount and the total effort. Move a number and everything follows.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
The Resources sheet crosses your people against the plan. Each person gets a row showing their load period by period, and it turns red wherever they are committed beyond capacity. It answers the question a bar chart cannot: the team is big enough, but is the architect free in March?

WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS ARE HANDLED
Working days are counted properly, so Saturdays and Sundays never count as capacity. Four holiday calendars come pre-filled for 2026 and 2027 — United States, United Kingdom, common European, and Italy — and you switch between them from a dropdown on the Plan sheet. A week with a public holiday in it carries four fifths of the usual capacity, and the warnings follow automatically. Replace any calendar with your own country's, or with your company's shutdown days.

WEEKLY, DAILY OR FORTNIGHTLY
One cell sets the period length: 7 for weeks, 1 for days, 14 for fortnights. The whole timeline redraws. 52 periods and 50 tasks — a year of weeks, or two years of fortnights.

THE FIVE SHEETS
• Read Me — how it works, the colour legend, method notes and licence
• Plan — the grid, the bars, the dates, the capacity line
• Resources — who you have and where they are double-booked
• Calendar — four editable holiday sets
• Summary — shape of the plan, total effort, and every place it breaks

ALSO IN THERE
A thin red line marks the current period and moves on its own · milestones by typing the letter M · owner dropdowns · task status · working days per task · a count of unassigned tasks, because those are the ones that slip.

WHO IT'S FOR
Project and programme managers, PMO leads, delivery and operations teams, consultants planning client work, anyone who has been asked for a plan by Friday and does not want to open Project.
