The Hobbiton Movie Set sits on a rolling emerald green Waikato pastoral farm approximately 15 kilometres southwest of the small rural farming town of Matamata, in the central North Island of New Zealand — approximately 175 kilometres south of Auckland and 160 kilometres north of Rotorua. The extraordinary film set is one of the most-visited and most-photographed film location sets anywhere in the world — with over 650,000 international visitors per year from every corner of the globe. Hobbiton was originally scouted, designed, and constructed by New Zealand-born director Sir Peter Jackson and his production team between 1999 and 2000 for the extraordinary production of Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy (released 2001-2003). Sir Peter Jackson had grown up loving J.R.R. Tolkien's original Lord of the Rings novels (published between 1954-1955) since childhood, and had personally decided that the extraordinary rural Waikato farmland of the central North Island — with its distinctive rolling emerald green pastoral hillsides, isolated rural setting, and complete absence of visible modern infrastructure — was the single perfect real-world landscape to serve as the visual representation of Tolkien's fictional Shire. Sir Peter Jackson scouted approximately 300 potential farm properties across the entire North Island before selecting the 500-hectare Alexander family sheep farm as the primary Hobbiton film location. Construction of the original Hobbiton film set involved building 39 individual hobbit holes into the natural pastoral hillside terrain, constructing extensive elaborate cottage gardens, landscaping the Party Tree area, constructing the iconic ancient wooden Bywater Bridge, and building the beautiful thatched warm crimson-red and warm cream Green Dragon Inn thatched pub. The original 2000-2001 film set construction was designed to be temporary — with the intention that the entire set would be demolished immediately after the Lord of the Rings film production wrapped in December 2000. However, the extraordinary quality of the finished set combined with the tremendous international success of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy convinced Sir Peter Jackson and the Alexander family farm owners to preserve the film set as a permanent film-tourism destination. In 2011, when Sir Peter Jackson returned to the Alexander farm to shoot the second Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy — The Hobbit (2012-2014) — Jackson and the Alexander family completely rebuilt the entire Hobbiton film set using extraordinarily durable construction materials designed to last permanently, and expanded the film set from 39 hobbit holes to the current 44 hobbit holes plus significantly expanded gardens, expanded stream landscaping, expanded pastoral fields, and an expanded fully-functional operational Green Dragon Inn pub. Today the Hobbiton Movie Set operates as one of New Zealand's most beloved film-tourism destinations.
