A library card, stamped BANNED — OCT 1961.

Now look at the dates underneath it.

The card was pulled. The official stamps stop. And then somebody picks up a pen, and the borrowing just carries on. 1962. 1965. 1969. 1971. 1973. Twelve more years of loans the library never officially made — written in by hand, in whatever pen was nearby.

One of them never came back at all.

Every empire, every board, every committee that ever pulled a book believed it was settling the matter. The list gets written. The list gets enforced. The people enforcing it retire, and die, and the book is still on a shelf somewhere being handed to somebody.

Printed on aged stock with the stamps landing exactly as worn rubber lands them — dry in places, doubled where the hand rocked, dragged where it slipped.
