The card was pulled. The official stamps stop. And then somebody picks up a pen, and the borrowing just carries on — 11 more years of loans the library never officially made, written in by hand, in whatever pen was nearby.

One of them never came back at all.

Every board and every committee that ever pulled a book believed it was settling the matter. The list gets written. The list gets enforced. The people enforcing it retire, and die, and the book is still on a shelf somewhere being handed to somebody.

Printed on aged stock with the stamps landing exactly as worn rubber lands them — dry in places, doubled where the hand rocked, dragged where it slipped.
