Asking a patient who matters to them produces a list. Asking them to place people at a distance produces something else, a picture they have to look at and then explain to themselves, and this instrument does the second thing.

It is not a test. It has no norms, no scoring and no cut-offs, and it should never be presented to a patient as a measure of anything. It works as a surface that makes the relational field visible, so that both of you can be curious about its shape.

WHO WROTE IT
I'm Alberto Del Bove, a psychologist and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist trained in Rome, in private practice with adults. Everything in The Consulting Room is written and clinically reviewed by me, and most of it started as material I needed in my own sessions before it became something to share.
