Highlights

The check-in at the start of a session usually asks for a number out of ten, which is about the least informative thing a person can say about themselves, since it compresses a week into a digit and invites comparison with last week's digit.

These are visual scales with two poles and no numbers, and the patient puts a mark wherever they are between them. What the format buys you is the space between the poles, because a patient can place themselves nearer one end and still hesitate, and the hesitation stays legible on the page.
