How to read a copyright page

A first edition is not a claim on a dust jacket. It is a set of marks on one page most people never turn to.

This sheet lays that page out in full — the disclaimer, the copyright notice, the reservation of rights, the publisher and its street address, the identifiers, the edition statements, the printer's credits — and then points at the thirteen things that actually settle which printing you are holding.

1 THE DISCLAIMER — says the story is invented; it is there to prevent litigation
2 THE COPYRIGHT NOTICE — the symbol, the year, and the name of the owner
3 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED — custom, not law; the words carry no legal effect
4 PUBLISHER AND PLACE — which house issued it, and from what address
5 ISBN — International Standard Book Number; new for every edition and format
6 LCCN — Library of Congress Control Number; the catalogue record for the book
7 THE STATED LINE — some houses print it outright; its absence proves nothing
8 THE PUBLISHER'S MARK — Scribner's used a capital A, Knopf a Borzoi
9 THE NUMBER LINE — the lowest digit is the printing; a 1 is a first
10 THE CREDITS — who designed the jacket, and sometimes who set the type
11 THE DUST JACKET — must match the printing and keep its original price
12 BOOK CLUB TELLS — a blind stamp on the rear board, no price on the jacket
13 POINTS AND STATES — errors corrected mid-run; the uncorrected reading is earliest
