Where it earns its place is in the gap the legal papers leave. A will says who
inherits the house. It does not say which cupboard the spare key is in, who feeds the
cat on Tuesday, which subscriptions are still charging a card, or what you would want
said at the service.

THE FIRST WEEKS SECTION

Most binders in this category start with forms. This one starts with a plain
checklist of what actually needs doing — first hours, first days, first weeks, and
later — because the person holding it has usually never done any of this before.

It also says, in writing, that almost nothing has to be decided today. Sometimes that
is the most useful sentence on the page.

HOW TO USE IT

Do not try to finish it in one sitting. This is not a form.

Start with the practical sections — documents, contacts, money, cancellations. They
cause the most difficulty and are the least emotionally demanding to fill in. Leave
the final wishes and the messages for a day when you feel like it.

Then tell at least two people it exists and where it is kept. This is the step people
skip, and it makes everything else pointless.
