Most permit problems do not begin with a missed deadline. They begin with nobody realizing a permit was needed at all.

The Event Permitting Atlas is a special event permit guide for thirteen US markets, built by a working producer and researched to primary agency sources. For each city it tells you which agency owns the approval, what conditions quietly trigger a second or third permit, which approval has the longest and least forgiving lead time, what sits outside the application fee, and where to verify and file.

Most permit resources hand you a list. This one hands you the gating item: the single approval that decides whether your event happens on the date you already sold.

WHO IT'S FOR

- Event producers working across multiple cities
- Brand and agency teams running activations, tours and pop-ups in unfamiliar markets
- Venue and hospitality teams fielding permit questions from clients
- Corporate planners handling conferences, galas and offsites that cross jurisdictions
- Nonprofit and festival organizers dealing with street closures and public land
- Anyone about to promise a client a date they have not verified

WHAT'S INSIDE, 18 FILES

- 00 Start Here: the order to open the files and how the system fits together
- 01 The Event Permitting Atlas: the system, the thirteen-market matrix, and seven rules that hold in every market
- 02 Event Permit Decision Matrix: fourteen permit families to check before you open any city sheet
- 03 to 15: thirteen market sheets covering Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco and Washington DC
- 16 Worked Example: one rooftop brand activation run end to end, from the jurisdiction question to the gating item and the client budget
- 17 Complete Your System: what else is in the shop, where it overlaps with this, and where it does not

Every market sheet uses the same six sections: Permits at a Glance, What the filing fee does not cover, Lead-Time Planner, Local heads-up, Official links, and an Agency key.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

- Jurisdiction first. Los Angeles, Miami and Las Vegas are not single jurisdictions, and the Atlas says so plainly instead of pretending there is one permit per city. The Strip is Clark County, not Las Vegas. The National Mall is federal land, not a DC park.
- Real filing lines. Austin runs four tiers from 3 business days to 180 calendar days. New York runs from 10 days to December 31 of the preceding year depending on how the event is classified. The Atlas states each one instead of averaging them into a useless range.
- The gate, not the deadline. In several markets the approval that decides your event is not the one with a published deadline. It is a hearing calendar, a landowner sign-off, an event tier or a landmark review. Each sheet names it.
- What the fee does not cover. Police details, fire standby, engineering, traffic control and insurance routinely exceed the application fee. Each sheet lists them so they reach the client budget before you contract.
- Primary sources. Official agency links on every sheet, so you verify against the agency rather than a blog.

EDITION

2026.09 Edition. Market sheets last reviewed August 2026. The Atlas carries a revision history recording the edition, the review date and the areas updated.

IF YOU ALREADY OWN THE EVERYTHING BUNDLE

One overlap, stated plainly. The Atlas's New York City sheet carries the same permitting content as the NYC Permitting Cheat Sheet inside The Everything Bundle, and this Atlas's Decision Matrix shares its fourteen-family permit checklist with that bundle's Event Permits & Compliance document.

Everything else here is new to you: twelve further market sheets, the Atlas guide and the thirteen-market matrix, the worked example, and the sequencing and cost work that the bundle's single compliance document does not carry. If you produce in New York only, the bundle already covers you. If you are quoting or scouting anywhere else on the list, this is the file you are missing.

If you own neither, they do different jobs. The Everything Bundle is the production toolkit: schedule, budget, run of show, vendors, guests, catering, contracts. The Atlas is the permitting reference. Neither substitutes for the other.

COMPLETE YOUR TOOLKIT

- The Everything Bundle, $79: sixteen working documents covering production end to end, from the first client brief to the final wrap report
- Vendor Management System, $28: tracker, COI log and live dashboard, the insurance side of everything the Atlas tells you to file for
- Master Event Budget, $24: auto-totaling estimated versus actual, where the permit costs the Atlas surfaces actually land

FAQ

Is this legal advice?
No. It is a starting reference for planning and client briefing. Permit names, thresholds, filing windows, fees and agency structure change. Verify with the venue and the issuing agency before you file or quote.

How current is it?
This is the 2026.09 Edition. Every market sheet carries a "Last reviewed August 2026" line, and the Atlas guide carries a revision history recording the edition, the review date and the areas updated. Permitting rules, forms, fees, agency responsibilities and lead times change. Verify current requirements with the issuing agency before you file or quote.

Can I edit the files?
Yes. They are editable Word documents, so you can add your own notes, brand them for internal use, or pull sections into a client brief.

Does it cover my city?
It covers thirteen markets: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco and Washington DC. The Decision Matrix works in any market, because it identifies the permit families to investigate rather than local thresholds.

What software do I need?
Microsoft Word. The files are .docx documents, built and tested for Word.

Will I get updates?
The Atlas is reviewed and revised periodically. When a revised edition is released it replaces the file on this listing, and you can re-download it from your Etsy purchases page. There is no promised schedule and no continuous monitoring of every agency, so verify current requirements with the issuing agency before you file or quote.

NOTE

Starting reference for planning and client briefing, not legal advice. This product does not replace an expediter, a licensed professional or the municipal code. Requirements change; verify current requirements with the venue and the issuing agency for your specific event.
