FRENCH & ENGLISH FIRST ALPHABET PACK — 76 printable pages, A4 and US Letter

For families raising a child in two languages, and for the parent or grandparent sitting next to them. All 26 letters plus ç, é and è, each with its French name and a plain-English hint for the sound.

--------------------------------------
FRENCH IS NOT PHONETIC. IT IS CONSISTENT.
--------------------------------------
Which is not the same thing, and it is much better news.

The same spelling always makes the same sound. -eau is always "oh". ou is always "oo". -ent on a verb is always silent. Learn the patterns and French reading opens all at once, rather than word by word.

The guide sets out seven rules and that is genuinely all of them — including the one that is half of French:

THE LAST LETTER IS USUALLY SILENT. Final e, s, t, d, x and z are nearly always silent. "petit" is "puh-TEE". Except before a vowel, when the silent letter wakes up and joins on: "les amis" is "lay-ZAH-mee". That is liaison, and it is why spoken French sounds like one long word.

--------------------------------------
WRITTEN FOR THE PARENT WHO DOES NOT SPEAK FRENCH
--------------------------------------
Every letter has its French name written out — "ache", "ji", "i grec", "double vé" — and a sound note in ordinary English.

H is always silent. J is the s in measure. Ç is always s. R lives at the back of the throat.

There is a two-page table you can keep beside you while you work.

--------------------------------------
ACCENTS ARE NOT DECORATION
--------------------------------------
é is "ay". è is the e in bed. Sometimes an accent only tells two words apart: a means has, à means to. The circumflex usually marks an s that fell out of the word centuries ago — forêt was forest.

And ç never begins a French word, so that page marks the letter in the middle of garçon, where it actually lives. Pretending otherwise would teach a child something untrue on day one.

--------------------------------------
WHAT IS IN THE PACK
--------------------------------------
29 ALPHABET PAGES — the 26 letters plus ç, é and è. Big upper and lower case, the letter's French name, the sound in English, four ruled rows (two to trace, two to fill in alone), then a picture, the word with the letter marked inside it, and the word to trace.

68 WORD CARDS — 18 pages, four cards to a page, dashed cut lines. Picture, French word with its le or la, English underneath. The English is there for you, not for them.

10 WORKSHEETS — three pages matching a picture to the French word, three matching French to English, four ruled writing pages.

13 EXTRA PAGES — un to dix with circles to count and colour, eight colour words, twelve family words with le and la attached, and eight everyday phrases to trace and say.

A 6-PAGE GUIDE FOR THE GROWN-UP — how to use it without turning it into a test, the full letter table, and the seven rules.

--------------------------------------
WHICH FRENCH IS THIS?
--------------------------------------
Standard French, understood in France, Québec, Belgium, Switzerland and West Africa alike. Nothing here is regional slang.

Numbers are the one real difference: Belgium and Switzerland say septante and nonante where France says soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix. The pack only goes to ten, so it does not take a side.

Where a word in your family differs from mine, cross mine out and write yours. Yours is the one your child will actually use.

--------------------------------------
WHO IT IS FOR
--------------------------------------
- French-speaking families abroad, for the twenty minutes of the day that are yours
- One French parent, one not — the guide is written for the one who does not speak it
- Grandparents, with big letters, thick lines and a phone-call page
- Bilingual and immersion classrooms
- Anyone learning French themselves
- Anyone travelling with children

Roughly ages 3 to 6 — a child starting to hold a pencil. Older children can use the cards and phrases without the tracing.

--------------------------------------
PRINTING
--------------------------------------
Black and white on purpose, so it costs almost nothing to print again when the first one is covered in felt tip.

Print at 100% or "actual size", not "fit to page", or the writing lines shift. Cards print best on the thickest paper you have. Both A4 and US Letter are included.

--------------------------------------
WHAT YOU GET — 3 INSTANT DOWNLOADS
--------------------------------------

--------------------------------------
HONEST LIMITS — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING
--------------------------------------
- There is no audio. The pronunciation help is written, and for French in particular a real voice will beat it — especially for the nasal sounds and the r. Pair it with whoever in your family speaks French, or any free recording of the alphabet.
- It is not a curriculum. It does not teach verbs, agreement or reading sentences.
- The PDFs are fixed, not editable.
- It is printable files, not an app, a subscription or a printed book.
- Paper will not teach a child a language. Talking to them will. This is for the part of the week when you want something in front of you both.

ABOUT ACCESS

I never ask for access to anything. No password, no login, no app permissions. You buy the files, you download them, that is the whole transaction.
