THE ITALIAN ALPHABET HAS 21 LETTERS
--------------------------------------
Not 26.

There is no j, k, w, x or y in an Italian word. They appear only in names and in words borrowed from elsewhere, and an Italian child learns them separately, at the end.

They are in this pack, at the end, for exactly that reason. Most alphabet packs sold as "Italian" are the English alphabet with Italian words bolted on, and a child who learns it that way has to unlearn it at school.

WRITTEN FOR THE PARENT WHO DOES NOT SPEAK ITALIAN

Every letter has its Italian name written out — "acca", "cu", "zeta", "i lunga" — and a sound note in ordinary English.

c and g soften before e and i: casa is "KAH-za" but cena is "CHEH-na". h has no sound at all. r is rolled with the tip of the tongue.

There is a two-page table you can keep beside you while you work, and six rules written out in full.

THE TWO THINGS ENGLISH SPEAKERS ALWAYS MISS
--------------------------------------
H HAS NO SOUND. Its entire job is to keep c and g hard: chi is "kee", che is "keh". Without the h, chiave would be "chee-AH-veh". That is why the h page here uses chiave and marks the letter in the middle of the word, where it actually lives.

DOUBLE CONSONANTS ARE HELD, AND THEY CHANGE THE WORD. nono is ninth, nonno is grandfather. pala is a spade, palla is a ball. Hold the consonant a beat longer. English speakers skip this more than anything else, and Italians hear it every time.

WHICH ITALIAN IS THIS?

Standard Italian, understood the length of the country and in Switzerland too. Nothing here is dialect.

Where families differ, yours wins: l'anguria and il cocomero are the same watermelon. If your family says something else, cross mine out and write yours.

Dialect is a different matter altogether — Neapolitan and Sicilian are their own languages, not accents. This pack teaches the Italian your child will meet at school and leaves the rest to your family.

- There is no audio. The pronunciation help is written, and a real voice will always beat it — especially for the rolled r and the double consonants. Pair it with whoever in your family speaks Italian, or any free recording of the alphabet.
- It is not a curriculum. It does not teach verbs, agreement or reading sentences.
- The PDFs are fixed, not editable.
- It is printable files, not an app, a subscription or a printed book.
- Paper will not teach a child a language. Talking to them will. This is for the part of the week when you want something in front of you both.
