K, W AND Y ONLY JOINED THE ALPHABET IN 2009

Before that, Portuguese officially had 23 letters. The spelling agreement of 1990 — which Brazil and Portugal only both put into practice around 2009 — brought the other three in.

So a grandparent's alphabet book may well say 23, and they are right about the book they learned from. Those three sit at the end of this pack, because they are still almost never used in a Portuguese word.

That is the sort of thing this pack tells you.

BRAZIL OR PORTUGAL? BOTH.

It is one written language, and a child who learns these letters can read a book printed in either country. What differs is the music of it, a handful of everyday words, and one grammar habit.

There is a whole page in the guide on it, with a table printed side by side:

comboio / trem — autocarro / ônibus — telemóvel / celular — casa de banho / banheiro — pequeno-almoço / café da manhã — ananás / abacaxi

Cross out the column that is not yours. And on the phrases page you get both "como estás?" and "como você está?" — keep the one your family uses.

WRITTEN FOR THE PARENT WHO DOES NOT SPEAK PORTUGUESE

Every letter has its Portuguese name written out — "agá", "jota", "dáblio", "ípsilon" — and a sound note in ordinary English.

THE TILDE IS A NOSE, NOT AN ACCENT. ã and õ are said through the nose, and there is nothing like them in English. Neither ever begins a word, so the ã page uses "pão" and marks the letter in the middle, where it actually lives. Same for ç in "maçã".

H HAS NO SOUND OF ITS OWN. It only exists inside three pairs: ch is sh, lh is the lli in million, nh is ny.

THE R AT THE FRONT OF A WORD IS A THROATY H. In Brazil, "Rio" sounds close to "HEE-oo".

AND THANK YOU CHANGES WITH WHO IS SAYING IT. A boy says obrigado, a girl says obrigada. It does not depend on who you are thanking. Children find this easy and adults get it wrong for years.

HONEST LIMITS — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING

- There is no audio. The pronunciation help is written, and for the nasal sounds in particular a real voice will always beat it. Pair it with whoever in your family speaks Portuguese, or any free recording of the alphabet.
- It is not a curriculum. It does not teach verbs, agreement or reading sentences.
- The PDFs are fixed, not editable.
- It is printable files, not an app, a subscription or a printed book.
- Paper will not teach a child a language. Talking to them will. This is for the part of the week when you want something in front of you both.
