51 plants that actually tolerate saturated Piedmont clay - sorted by how wet they can really take it, which is the part every other plant list gets wrong.

WHY THIS EXISTS

"Tolerates clay" and "tolerates wet" are two different claims, and nurseries blur them constantly. NC State's own plant database keeps them in two separate fields for exactly that reason - soil texture and soil drainage. A great many plants sold as "good for clay" require good drainage and will die in a wet spot.

So every plant in this guide is sorted into one of three tiers, and I quote the source language I based it on:

TIER A - tolerates standing water or repeated flooding. The basin.
TIER B - wants consistently moist soil and dies sitting in water. The slopes.
TIER C - handles heavy clay but needs the water to leave. The rim, never the basin.

FOUR PLANTS I WON'T OVERSELL YOU

Where NC sources contradict each other, I say so. Winterberry holly is rated for wetland conditions by one NC Extension list and "requires good drainage" by another - both are Extension. Swamp azalea has swamp in the name and needs drainage. I'd rather tell you that than pick the answer that sells more plants.

Every tolerance claim is sourced to North Carolina institutions - the NC Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox, NC Cooperative Extension county publications, the NC State Rain Garden Manual, the North Carolina Botanical Garden, and the NC Native Plant Society invasive list. Nothing is inferred from another state's growing conditions, and nothing is inferred from a plant seeming like a wet-soil plant. Full source list included.
