SALINAS VALLEY — 1952

A long trough of farmland running between the Gabilan range to the east and the Santa Lucias to the west, opening north to Monterey Bay. Steinbeck was born in Salinas in 1902 and spent his childhood in it, and he opened East of Eden by describing the valley before introducing a single person — the light, the two mountain ranges, and how differently he felt about each of them. It's also the setting of The Pastures of Heaven, The Red Pony, and the country around Of Mice and Men. Today it grows a large share of the country's lettuce and is known as the Salad Bowl of the World.

This print treats Salinas Valley as a place worth naming — set like civic signage, with the year it entered American literature. Part of an ongoing series of literary places.
