NANTUCKET — 1851

A small crescent island thirty miles off Cape Cod that became, for a few decades, the whaling capital of the world. Its ships sailed to the Pacific and stayed away for years at a time, and the fortunes they brought home built the brick houses still standing on Main Street. Melville sent Ishmael here to find a berth, and gave the island a chapter of its own before the Pequod ever left the harbor — a place, he wrote, that its people had made their own by simply going to sea and living there. By the time Moby-Dick appeared in 1851 the industry was already turning; petroleum finished it within twenty years.

This print treats Nantucket as a place worth naming — set like civic signage, with the year it entered American literature. Part of an ongoing series of literary places.
