Utagawa Hiroshige’s Hatsune Riding Ground, from the celebrated late series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58), exemplifies the bold, radically modern compositional framing of late ukiyo-e printmaking. The scene is structured around a dramatic contrast between the immediate foreground and the distant horizon: the gnarled, textured trunk and green branches of an ancient pine tree frame a sweeping view across the equestrian training grounds toward the distant, snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji. Hiroshige employs an extreme close-up viewpoint that deliberately crops the tree, creating visual tension and an immersive sense of spatial depth that revolutionized Western art when discovered by Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, and James McNeill Whistler. The pristine white of the mountain peaks contrasts with the deep Prussian blue of the sky and the warm green marshland below.
