Utagawa Hiroshige’s Narumi, from the renowned color woodblock cycle The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, captures the bustling commercial and cultural vitality of nineteenth-century Edo Japan. Narumi, the fortieth station along the great coastal highway, was celebrated throughout the country for its distinctive arimatsu shibori, an intricate resist tie-dyed indigo textile. In this print, Hiroshige depicts travelers arriving in open palanquins and on foot before elegant shops hung with patterned tie-dyed banners and fabric rolls. The composition is built on strong diagonal perspective lines that lead the viewer through the vibrant village street toward the green hills in the background. The rich shades of indigo blue, earth brown, and warm beige were achieved through multiple precision-carved cherry woodblocks and hand-rubbed pigments. The enormous commercial popularity of Hiroshige’s print turned Narumi into an essential shopping destination for Edo travelers and later influenced the compositional framing of European Impressionism. Hiroshige’s acute eye for regional customs, craft traditions, and commercial life transforms this print from a landscape view to a rich cultural document of late Edo society. Sourced directly from The Metropolitan Museum of Art via the Gift of Cole J. Younger in 1975 under accession number JP3481, the work stands as a tribute to Japan's historic textile craft.
