FINISHED SIZE

About 16 cm, 6.3 in, long and 8 cm, 3.1 in, tall. The longest thing in this shop by a wide margin. Lightly stuffed and hung on a short satin ribbon.

Tan felt, one sheet, 25 x 35 cm, 1 to 2 mm thick, for the dog, the ear and the tail
Dark brown felt, a 3 x 3 cm scrap, for the nose
A strip of blue gingham cotton, 30 x 4 cm, for the scarf
Tan embroidery floss for the outer edge, the ear and the tail
Dark brown embroidery floss for the one eye and the nose
Soft pink blush or chalk pastel for the one cheek
Toy stuffing, 14 to 18 g
20 cm of satin ribbon, 6 mm wide
Needle, scissors, pins, a soft pencil

THE EAR AND THE TAIL ARE NOT STUCK ON

This is the one thing that makes the ornament, and it is the reason it does not look flat. The ear is cut twice and blanket stitched together into its own finished little flap. The tail is cut twice and finished the same way. Neither is stuffed. Then, right at the end, the open base of each one is slipped between the two body pieces and caught by the main seam. What you get is an ear that hangs over the scarf and lifts when you touch it, and a tail that stands away from the rump instead of lying against it. It takes about fifteen minutes more than appliqué and it is the whole difference between a dog and a dog shaped biscuit.

THE NOSE IS STITCHED UNTIL IT STANDS UP

A tiny dark brown oval goes on the very tip of the muzzle with half of it standing proud of the outline, and then you satin stitch across it, packed close, until it stops being a flat patch and becomes a solid raised bead. On a dog the nose is the first thing anyone looks at. This one gets a whole step and a detail photograph.

SIXTEEN CENTIMETRES OF STUFFING

A long back is the only difficulty in this pattern and the instructions deal with it directly. Fill from the middle of the back outwards, then the head, then the four feet, in small pinches with the blunt end of a pencil, and stop before it feels full. An overstuffed dachshund arches upward into a banana. A soft one keeps its line and hangs straight.

ONE EYE, ONE CHEEK, AND NOTHING ELSE DARK

He is in profile, so he has one closed eye, one blushed cheek and one nose, and that is the entire contrast budget. No mouth, no second eye, no darker outline round the ear. Everything else is tan on tan with the blanket stitch a half shade lighter than the felt, so the outline reads without shouting. The pattern says all of this out loud because the temptation to add a mouth is strong and it always makes it worse.

A CHECK, NOT A FLORAL

The scarf is a 30 by 4 cm strip of small blue gingham, a centimetre wider than the cats in this shop use because a dachshund has more neck to cover. It is not hemmed and it is not sewn on: fold it lengthways, tie it once after the dog is stuffed and closed, and tie it loosely. A check reads as a dog and a floral reads as a cat, which sounds like nonsense and is completely true.

MAKE IT A CHRISTMAS DOG

Swap the blue gingham for a red check and the same pattern is a Christmas tree ornament, which is where most of these end up. Sewn in black with tan feet it is a different dachshund again, and in chocolate or in cream it is a third, from one pattern sheet.

SEW IT WITH A CHILD

Five shapes, one small piece and a face that is three short jobs. A child of about eight can do most of it with an adult alongside for the needle and the scissors, and the cheek is a job you can hand over completely because there is no way to get blush wrong. The nose is the one bit worth keeping for yourself.

SKILL LEVEL

Easy beginner. Hand sewing only, no machine needed. Blanket stitch, satin stitch, back stitch, straight stitch, whip stitch and ladder stitch are all explained inside, and the dog only really needs the first four.
