Vintage Afghan tribal choker — a wide brass-tone chainmail band mounted on black fabric, set with jewel-toned glass in emerald, cobalt, magenta and red, finished with a dense fringe of chains and small bells. Genuinely old, genuinely worn, and all the better for it.

Ceremonial neckwear in the nomadic tradition is built to move and to sound. The bell fringe is not ornament: sound was believed to clear the space around the wearer, and a collar that rings as she walks is doing its job. The teardrop and rosette glass settings repeat the eye motif down the whole fringe, and the fabric backing with its hand-sewn red and white bead trim is the original construction — these were sewn to be worn, not mounted for display.

The band is built from linked brass-tone chain rows over black cloth, with flower rosettes in red, green and violet glass set into the face. Below hangs a curtain of chains carrying teardrop and disc plaques in coloured glass, each ending in small brass-tone bells. Fastens at the back with a woven cord tie, so it adjusts.

Metal: aged brass-tone and silver-tone alloy
Setting: coloured glass inlay
Backing: black cloth with hand-sewn bead trim

Adjustable length.

Condition: vintage, with age-appropriate wear and patina — please see all photos

This is a collector's item first and a wearable piece second, though it does both. Worn tight at the throat over black it is the most dramatic thing in the collection.

Genuine period tribal work with real age on it. Colour, wear and glass condition are specific to this piece and cannot be repeated.
