Forty eight things to do instead of a screen, on cards you cut out and
keep in a jar. Sorted by how long they take and what they need. For ages
5 to 12.

THE SIX CATEGORIES
- Ten minutes or less: paper aeroplane contests, sock basketball,
drawing with your wrong hand
- Half an hour or more: forts, comic strips, inventing a board game
- Outside: cloud spotting, bug hunts, stick sculptures, shadow drawing
- Making things: cardboard box anything, origami, marble runs
- With somebody else: teaching an adult something, story tennis,
secret handshakes
- Quiet things: reading somewhere unusual, writing the worst poem
possible, learning a card trick

THE RULE THAT MAKES IT WORK
Pull one out. Do what it says. No putting it back, no pulling a second
one.

Being allowed to reject cards turns the jar into another decision, and
deciding what to do is the exact thing that felt impossible five minutes
ago. Taking the choice away is the whole trick. There is a page to stick
on the jar so nobody forgets.

WHAT YOU GET
- 14 page PDF, instant download
- 48 cards, six per category
- Blank cards so your child can add their own
- The boredom rule page to stick on the jar
- A screen free week tracker
- A certificate

Every card is one line to read and one line explaining it. Nothing needs
buying, and almost nothing needs an adult.

HOW TO SET IT UP
Cut the cards out once, which takes about twenty minutes and is a
reasonable activity in itself. Fold them, put them in a jar, tin or
envelope. That is the entire setup.

THE DETAILS
- US Letter 8.5 x 11, prints clearly in black and white
- Card stock lasts longer but ordinary paper works
- Scissors and a jar is the whole materials list
- Print as many times as you like for children in your own household
