Seller's description

CALATHEA DOTTIE
Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Dottie’ • Dark-Foliage Prayer Plant

BURGUNDY DEPTH. ROSE-PINK DETAIL. A CANOPY THAT CHANGES WITH THE LIGHT.

Dottie brings a distinctly dramatic palette to the living collection. Broad leaves carry deep burgundy-green to near-black surfaces, illuminated by a vivid rose-pink midrib and a curved inner ring. The dark foliage gives the pink its definition, creating a finely outlined pattern with the presence of something painted by hand.

Yet this is a display with its own movement. Leaves change position through the day and night, altering the way they overlap and the angles at which their markings are seen. Dottie combines the visual confidence of dark foliage with the quieter fascination of a prayer plant whose silhouette never feels entirely fixed.

THE RHYTHM OF A PRAYER PLANT

As a member of the Marantaceae family, Dottie can raise, lower and subtly reorient its leaves in response to its daily rhythm and changing light. A leaf that lies more openly at one time may stand at a steeper angle later, revealing a different relationship between the pink pattern, the dark blade and the surrounding foliage.

Give the plant room to express that movement. A position where it can be appreciated from more than one angle allows its rounded leaves and layered canopy to become part of the experience of growing it.

DARK COLOR, INTRICATE CONTRAST

Dottie’s markings do not need to cover the whole leaf to make an impression. The fine pink line stands out precisely because so much of the surface remains dark. Its curved path follows the inner shape of the blade, while the midrib creates a second, bolder line through the center.

Fresh leaves can emerge in lighter green or burgundy tones before deepening as they mature. Across an established plant, newer and older foliage therefore contribute different intensities to the same palette. Each developing leaf adds its own pattern and proportion without losing the unmistakable Dottie character.

A LAYERED TROPICAL SPECIMEN

Growth develops from the base into a fuller cluster. More upright new foliage rises among outward-arching leaves, gradually creating a rounded, sculptural form. This balance of heights and angles gives the plant depth while allowing individual leaves to remain visible.

Dottie is especially compelling beside silver, chartreuse or plain green foliage, where the darker canopy creates a strong contrast. It also rewards a setting of its own: a simple planter, suitable filtered light and enough space to appreciate both the outline of the plant and the pink details within it.

CARE FOR A BEAUTIFUL CANOPY

Light
Provide medium to bright, indirect or gently filtered light. Protect the broad leaves from prolonged harsh direct sun.

Moisture and growing medium
Keep the mix evenly moist and freely draining, watering as the surface begins to dry. Use an airy, moisture-retentive tropical mix in a container with drainage. Rainwater or distilled water is useful where tap water contains high levels of dissolved minerals or fluoride.

Humidity and placement
Above-average humidity and steady indoor warmth suit Dottie well. A suitable plant cabinet or humidity-friendly indoor space can provide a stable setting. Maintain airflow and keep the plant away from cold drafts and direct heating or cooling vents.

Upkeep
Let new leaves unfold naturally and gently remove dust from mature foliage with a soft, damp cloth. Feed lightly during active growth according to the fertilizer label. Allow time to settle after arrival before repotting or feeding.

YOUR SELECTION

Select your preferred available growth stage from the dropdown. You will receive one live, rooted Calathea Dottie in its nursery container with growing medium, chosen to match your option. Your plant will have its own leaf arrangement and pink markings. Unpack promptly and provide suitable indirect light, warmth and humidity.
