You wrote it. You have no idea what it means.

Meanwhile your phone is very confident that the party is Saturday at two, which would be helpful if the date were ever the problem. It isn't. The problem is that you haven't bought a gift, you're fairly sure you told someone you'd bring a fruit tray, and there is a field trip form going soft in the bottom of a backpack.

You have wrapped a present in the car outside the party. Everyone has. It isn't really a planning failure, it's that nothing told you in time.

Off the Fridge holds that part.

Plan kids' birthdays, classmate parties, playdates, school events, sports and family occasions. Track the gift, the RSVP, the snacks, the permission slips and who is responsible, so you know what is genuinely handled.

One file. Opens in whatever browser you already have. No account, no install, no monthly anything.

It also works with no internet. Once it is on your phone it keeps working on a plane, in a basement, in a school parking lot with one bar. Nothing to load, nothing to sync, nothing to wait for.

How it goes

Something lands on you. Tap the plus, pick the kid, pick the date, say what it needs. A gift. Snacks. An RSVP. A form to sign. Twenty seconds, which matters, because you are usually doing this one-handed in a hallway while somebody asks you where their shoe is.

Then the top of the home screen tells you where the week stands. Green is handled, amber needs you, red is going to be a problem if you keep scrolling.

Here's the part I actually care about. If an event has nothing on its list yet, it will not call itself handled. Most planners hand you a green checkmark the second a list is empty, and an empty list almost always means you haven't thought about it yet. That's when you want somebody to say something, not when you want a gold star.

Gifts, which are their own disaster

You buy something great in October. December shows up and you can't find it, or you can't remember who it was for, or you buy a second one and then find the first one in February behind the wrapping paper.

So gifts here get three states instead of two. Still to buy. On hand. Already given. Bought and given are not the same thing, and one checkbox has never once known the difference.

If you stocked up ahead with nobody particular in mind, tap Use from Closet when the invite finally shows up and it becomes that gift. Not a copy of it. Same record, same price, same notes you already typed in.

It also hangs onto what you gave each kid last year. Which is the whole reason I stopped standing in Target trying to remember whether the scooter was Ruby's or Max's.

The lock

Four-digit PIN. Gift names go behind it. Every price goes behind it. A surprise party reads "A surprise" and nothing else.

Snacks, RSVPs, dates, who agreed to do what: all still visible. That part is deliberate. A lock that hides the entire calendar is a lock you'll switch off by Wednesday, because you need the calendar.

So you can hand a curious eight-year-old the phone. There's nothing in there for them to find.

Things it won't do

I'd rather you hear this from me now than find out on Tuesday.

It can't send you notifications. It never connects to anything, so there's nothing to send them from. What it does instead is hand your own calendar the event with the whole list attached, and let your calendar nag you, which it is already good at.

It won't sync between two phones by itself. Moving your stuff to a new device is a backup and a restore that you do on purpose.

The lock is a lock, not a vault. Somebody nosy can still work out that three gifts exist. They just can't see what they are. It isn't bank-grade security and I'm not going to dress it up as any.

There's no password reset either. No account, nothing stored anywhere but your device, nobody to email about it. Your backup file is the entire safety net, which is why the guide is faintly obsessive about it.

On an iPhone or iPad, don't start with the file. Start with the icon. The download includes a private address that puts Off the Fridge on your home screen in about twenty seconds. No app store, no extra apps, and it keeps working with no signal after that. The guide walks you through it.

The file is still yours and still works on any computer. It's only if you want to open the file itself on an iPad that you'd need a free file app like Documents by Readdle, because Apple's Files app previews this kind of file instead of running it. Going in by the home screen skips all of that.

Where your information goes

Nowhere. Nothing you type leaves the device you typed it on. No account, no cloud, no analytics, nobody's dashboard. That isn't clever privacy engineering on my part, it's just what happens when a file has nowhere to send anything.
