Price your ingredients once and every recipe you build reads that one list. When butter goes up, you change it in a single cell and every cake, cupcake and cookie you sell reprices itself. Then it does the part almost no pricing sheet does: it puts your own hours into the cost at the wage you set, and tells you what your time actually earned.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

• One price list feeds everything. Type what the pack cost and how much came in it; the cost per gram is worked out to four decimal places, because a gram of butter is a fifth of a cent and rounding it away is how a margin goes missing.
• Your time is a cost, not an afterthought. Because your wage is inside the cost each, that figure IS the lowest price that is not a favour to the customer. Anything under it, the file says so plainly.
• It tells you what your hour paid. Batch minutes come from the recipe; decorating, packing and driving are typed, because only you know them. The last column is the truth.
• The ranking usually surprises people. Profit by Product ranks what you sell by what an hour of making it actually paid, from the orders you really delivered. On the shipped sample, the cookies pay more than three times what the showpiece cake pays.
• Grams, millilitres, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons or each. Type the recipe the way it was written down and the file converts it using your own grams-per-cup.

FIVE HONEST WARNINGS, BECAUSE YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY

1. Overhead is charged as a flat percentage of each job, so a big cake carries more of it than a cookie. That is the usual approach and it is close enough to make decisions on. It is not how an accountant would apportion it at year end.
2. Waste is not modelled. The recipe assumes nothing burns, drops or gets eaten. Add five to ten percent to your quantities if you want the truth about a bad week.
3. Your own wage is not a deduction. The file puts your time into the cost of a cake so that you price it properly. That is a pricing decision, not a tax one, and the Schedule C tab does not treat it as one.
4. Prices go stale. This file is only as current as the day you last typed a pack price. Put a reminder in for the first of the month.
5. It is not tax advice. The Schedule C tab sorts your own categories into the usual lines. It does not know your state, your home office or your vehicle.
