Highlights
Most of what kills a newly planted tree here is mechanical, not horticultural. It is the hole, the depth, the backfill and the mulch - and every one of those is free to get right.
FOUR CAUSES, AND NONE OF THEM IS THE PLANT
NC Cooperative Extension names four causes of plant failure: planting too deeply, under watering, over watering, over mulching.
Not the soil test. Not the fertilizer. Not the variety. Four mechanical errors, all made in the first hour, all costing nothing to avoid, and none correctable later without digging the plant back up.
WHAT IS INSIDE (12 pages)
- Hole geometry: NC State's exact spec, and the stated reason you must never dig deeper than the root ball
- Depth and the root flare, including how to find it when the nursery has already buried it
- What to backfill with, and where NC Extension offices genuinely disagree
- Root ball preparation for container stock and the three-step balled-and-burlapped sequence
- Staking: NC State's position is stronger than most people expect
- Mulch depth and trunk clearance, with the spread across NC sources
- Watering volumes and how long establishment actually takes
- Septic drain field setbacks, sewer lines, and foundations
- Timing, stated honestly rather than oversold
THE BURIED FLARE
NC Extension has documented root collars buried 6 to 12 inches in soil and mulch - before the plant ever reached the homeowner. So the soil line in the container is not your planting depth.
The instruction is to find where the uppermost root emerges from the trunk, and set that point at or slightly above grade. It may mean scraping two inches of potting mix off the top of the ball before you plant. The guide explains how to tell when a plant is already too deep, and what girdling roots look like.
A REAL DISAGREEMENT, PRINTED RATHER THAN HIDDEN
The NC State Extension Gardener Handbook says do not amend the backfill - amended soil confines roots to the hole. Two county Extension offices allow it in compacted clay, capped under 20 percent. Both are NC Extension.
I give both positions, say which I follow and why, and flag that the bathtub effect everyone attributes to NC State appears in no NC source I could find.
THE ONE THAT SURPRISES PEOPLE
NC Cooperative Extension, Union County: tree roots cannot create cracks in your sewer pipe - they can only exploit existing cracks or gaps. Planting five feet closer or further away will not make a difference.
A septic drain field is the opposite case. It is engineered to be moist and nutrient-rich, so roots actively seek it, and the setbacks are real and large - for trees, a distance equal to the tree's mature height. The guide separates the two systems, because almost nothing else does.
