A greyhound and a red fox sit across from each other at a candlelit restaurant table, halfway through what appears to be a very serious dinner conversation.

The greyhound holds the left side of the booth with the composed expression of someone who arrived five minutes early. Across the table, the fox looks equally attentive. Two glasses of red wine, matching plates and a pair of lit candles turn the meeting into something closer to an old-fashioned business lunch than a novelty animal scene.

The restaurant is warm and polished. Burgundy velvet seating, dark wood paneling, brass details and large mirrors create the atmosphere of a European brasserie or hotel dining room where lunch could easily stretch into late afternoon.

Autumn branches rise behind the greyhound while deep green foliage frames the fox. Those natural colors echo the animals without making the setting feel rustic.

The food stays understated: plated salads with roasted pears, bread at the center and wine beside each place setting. Nothing on the table competes with the two diners, which keeps the scene readable even at smaller sizes.

There are no costumes or exaggerated human gestures. The animals simply occupy their seats as if dinner reservations, wine lists and quiet negotiations are normal parts of their week.

That straight-faced treatment gives the artwork its humor. From across the room it reads as an elegant restaurant scene. A second look reveals that the two people having dinner are, in fact, a greyhound and a fox.

It works especially well in dining rooms, kitchens, living rooms, home bars and offices with eclectic, restaurant-inspired or slightly glamorous interiors.
