Seller's description

A striking antique Art Deco flying bird brooch, hand carved from translucent amber-coloured natural horn and decorated with three distinctive operculum shell “cat’s eye” cabochons.

The stylised bird has beautifully carved feather detailing and small contrasting piqué-style inlays throughout. The reverse shows the hand-worked surface of the horn and retains its simple metal pin fitting.

The brooch dates approximately to the 1920s–1930s and is characteristic of French carved horn jewellery of the period. It is unsigned, so no specific maker is attributed.

The three natural shell cabochons have wonderful concentric cream, amber and deep green colouring, giving the piece a particularly unusual and almost surreal appearance.

A large and dramatic statement brooch with strong Art Deco styling.
