Antique/vintage Whitby Jet scarf ring - hand-carved - sentimental/mourning jewellery - Victorian 1800's.
An antique hand-carved Whitby jet scarf ring inset with a silver cross containing a Forget Me Not flower flanked by a pair of hearts and etched to the sides of the jet with floral motifs, dating to the Victorian era.
An unusual addition to a collection of Whitby Jet & Mourning/Memento Mori pieces.
Approx. 1 2/16th's" by 1" by 0.75" or 2.8 cm by 2.5 cm by 2 cm, please study all the pictures for further size and condition guidance.
'Whitby Jet is formed from fossilised wood that can be polished to a high shine. In 1851 it was exhibited at the Great Exhibition and Queen Victoria became its most prolific patron. When Albert died in 1861 Queen Victoria took to wearing Jet in remembrance of him and it became etiquette to accessorise the periods mourning fashions with jewellery from the gemstone. During that period it was the only jewellery allowed to be worn at Court'.
