Zuri is a contemporary fine art portrait of a dark skinned woman with extraordinarily long black hair wrapped in deep forest green fabric patterned with pale ivory and gold cranes. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Zuri is a portrait about the difference between staying because you cannot leave and staying because you no longer need to.

She stands almost completely enveloped by fabric, yet nothing about the garment feels restrictive. One shoulder remains exposed. Her body is wrapped, but not enclosed. Across the deep green textile, cranes move in different directions, creating a quiet sense of passage within an otherwise remarkably still portrait.

That tension is central to Zuri.

The cranes suggest movement and return rather than departure alone. The green surrounding her becomes a kind of shelter, while the narrow plum interior offers a quieter note of warmth that is visible only where the garment opens.

Her long black hair, dark olive ground, pale embroidery, and restrained expression give the portrait a stately stillness, but the work is ultimately about choice rather than immobility.

CREATIVE PROCESS

This artwork begins with an AI assisted image generation process and is then individually developed and finished by me using the same visual judgment, digital editing, color work, retouching, compositing, and image finishing techniques that have shaped my professional practice for decades.

My background began in art history and curatorial work before moving into professional photography and high end retouching. I hold an MA in Art History and Curatorial Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and that curatorial perspective continues to inform the way I approach composition, symbolism, color, historical references, and the relationship between artwork and interior space.

The result is not presented as photography. Each piece is a digitally created artwork developed as part of an ongoing portrait collection in which every woman has her own visual language, symbolism, and story.
