Seller's description

Stevenson Memorial by Abbott Handerson Thayer, 1903, as a framed print in an antique gold frame on a cream wall. A winged angel in flowing white robes sits on a stone carved with the word Vailima, keeping watch in memory of Robert Louis Stevenson.

DESCRIPTION
Stevenson Memorial by Abbott Handerson Thayer, 1903, printed as an angel art poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and Jekyll and Hyde, died in Samoa in 1894 and was buried on Mount Vaea. Thayer, an American painter who loved his books, tried several times to honour him. This is the only version he kept. A pale angel sits on a domed rock carved with the word VAEA, hugging one knee, looking away. She is part mourner, part guardian, lit against deep darkness. The model was Bessie Price, who posed for several of Thayer's angels. Underneath lies a secret. Thayer first painted his three children here, as a tribute to Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. Then he painted over them with the angel, to carry a deeper grief. The canvas stands over two metres tall and hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.

THE LOOK
Luminous white against deep shadow. Quiet, sorrowful and watchful. Suits a study, bedroom, library or hallway.

REAL ART, NOT AI
Every print in our shop starts with a real painting from a museum collection or public archive. We research each work and prepare the file for print. We never sell AI-generated art.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.

PRINT QUALITY
240gsm matte paper. Archival, fade-resistant inks. Sharp detail and deep colour.
