Seller's description

DESCRIPTION
Circe Invidiosa by John William Waterhouse, 1892, printed as a Pre-Raphaelite mythology poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
The title means Envious Circe. The story comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The sorceress Circe falls for the sea god Glaucus, but he loves the nymph Scylla and turns Circe down. So Circe goes to the quiet pool where Scylla bathes and poisons it. Waterhouse paints the moment of revenge. Circe stands in a flowing green gown and pours a bowl of bright green poison into the blue water. Beneath her feet, Scylla writhes as she turns into a sea monster. Waterhouse strips the scene to one figure, one bowl and one act of spite. The Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide bought it straight from the artist in 1892, on the advice of a panel led by Frederic Leighton. It remains one of the most loved works in the collection.

THE LOOK
Deep emerald, jewel blue and poison green. Rich, dark and menacing. Suits a bedroom, study, reading nook or gallery wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
