I Flew Too Close to the Sun

Sometimes it's caused by trying to carry too much.
How high would you fly if you knew you might fall?
“I Flew Too Close to the Sun” is an original 16" x 16" hand-etched mirror by Evan B Etchen, inspired by the story of Icarus — the figure from Greek mythology who took flight on wings held together with wax.
Despite being warned not to fly too close to the sun, Icarus climbed higher. The heat eventually melted the wax holding his wings together, sending him falling from the sky.
That story became the inspiration behind this piece.
To me, it represents ambition and the danger that can come with it — the desire to keep climbing, keep reaching, and find out just how far you're capable of going, even when there's a risk of falling.
Every detail is etched directly into the mirror by hand. Linework, texture, and shading are worked individually into the glass, creating depth that interacts with the reflections and lighting around it.
