The Bravest Small Step

A Brave Like Me story. Printable digital picture book - 20 pages, one PDF, instant download.

Maya has gone first, ridden the bike and stood on the big stage, so she is sure brave means having no scared at all. Then a new dog moves in next door. Biscuit is not mean, just BIG: a shaggy mountain of a dog with a bark like a door slamming and paws the size of pancakes. Suddenly Maya always has something to do at the far end of the yard.

Grandpa Theo tells her a secret: brave was never about not being scared. Brave is taking the next small step while you're scared. So Maya takes one step toward the fence. The next day, two. Some days she goes back, and that is allowed. One warm afternoon she finds herself right at the fence, and the scary thing turns out to be a friend.

Why this one

• For children who think being brave means never feeling scared
• Shows progress as small steps, including the days you step back
• A kind neighbor shows the careful way to say hello to a dog, and grown-ups stay close by
• "Brave isn't the whole staircase. Brave is the next stair."

• Cover, title page and credits page
• 16 full-page illustrated story spreads with the read-aloud text on the page

Reading and printing

Made to be read on a screen. The pages are full-bleed illustrations, so they look good on a tablet, a phone or a laptop. You can also print at home on US Letter paper: choose "fit to page" in your printer settings, because the page is slightly taller than Letter.

Usage terms

For personal use only. Read it at home, print copies for your own family, or read it aloud to your own class. Please do not resell it, redistribute it, share the file, or use it commercially. The story and the illustrations remain the copyright of Made Out of Clay Productions.

A note on AI

The illustrations were created by the seller with AI image tools. The credits page inside the book puts it this way: "Illustrations created with AI tools under the publisher's direction." The story text and the page layout were also produced with AI assistance under my direction.

About the series

Brave Like Me is a set of gentle read-aloud stories about everyday courage: the ordinary scary things that are genuinely big when you are five. Every book ends on the same honest idea: brave is not the absence of scared, it is doing the thing with the scared still there. The grown-ups in these books don't fix the fear or talk the child out of it; they stay close while the child does the hard thing. Other Brave Like Me stories are listed in this shop.

Please note

This is a digital file, so there is nothing to send back. If anything is wrong with your download, message me and I will put it right.
