Point Bonita Lighthouse stands above the turbulent Pacific beneath a deep overcast sky, its beacon shining against the darkening weather. Fog slightly obscures the distant shore, while rough water and the rocky headland give this black-and-white photograph a dramatic sense of isolation.

Located in the Marin Headlands near the Golden Gate Bridge, Point Bonita has guided ships through the hazardous entrance to San Francisco Bay since the nineteenth century. Its exposed position, historic buildings, and suspension footbridge make it one of the California coast’s most distinctive lighthouses.

On this overcast April day, the familiar warmth and color of coastal California had disappeared beneath heavy clouds. Seen from the water, the lighthouse appeared to stand alone at the edge of the continent. The distant shoreline faded into the fog, waves moved restlessly across the foreground, and the beacon remained bright within the gathering gray.
