DESCRIPTION
The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, 1654, printed as a Dutch Golden Age poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Fabritius was Rembrandt's most gifted pupil. He settled in Delft, where his cool light and calm compositions shaped the young Vermeer. In 1654 he painted this small panel: a pet goldfinch perched on its feeder, tied by a thin chain, painted life size against a pale wall. Dutch families kept goldfinches as pets, and the picture works as a trick of the eye, as if a real bird sat on your wall. On 12 October that same year, a gunpowder store exploded in Delft and destroyed a quarter of the city. Fabritius died in the blast, aged 32, along with most of his work. Only about a dozen paintings survive. This is one of them, and scans have found small marks on its surface, possibly from the explosion. It hangs in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
