The cottage-garden look, built from plants deer usually skip: daffodils, bearded iris, peony, catmint, lavender, foxglove, coneflower and a haze of Russian sage. Every plant is rated "rarely" or "seldom severely damaged" in the Rutgers deer-resistance list. It's resistant, not deer-proof, and the plan explains what that means.

THREE BED SIZES, ONE DESIGN
8 x 4 ft (15 plants + 10 daffodil bulbs), 12 x 6 ft (24 plants + 15 bulbs) and 16 x 8 ft (44 plants + 25 bulbs). Each size has its own plan on a 1-ft grid with lettered drifts and counts, and an illustrated front view.

HONEST NOTES
This is not a pet-safe bed: lavender, allium, iris, peony, foxglove, yarrow and daffodil are toxic to dogs and cats (ASPCA), and every profile says so. Lavender needs sharp drainage; for the humid South the plan tells you what to plant instead. Daffodil bulbs go in in fall; planting in spring, you mark their spots and add them in October.
