THE 24 OBJECTS
Winter trees: white pine, blue spruce, balsam fir, eastern red cedar, American holly, paper birch.
Winter birds: northern cardinal, black-capped chickadee, blue jay, dark-eyed junco, downy woodpecker, white-breasted nuthatch.
Signs of winter: snowflake, icicle, frost, deer tracks, bird nest, frozen pond.
Winter animals: white-tailed deer, red fox, snowshoe hare, black bear, wood frog, beaver.

TRUE-SIZE CARDS, EASY TO CUT
Control card 3.5 x 4.5 in, picture card 3.5 x 3.5 in, label card 3.5 x 1 in. Stacked together, the picture card and label card match the control card, so children can check their own work. Each page holds two objects, and every cut is one straight line from crop mark to crop mark. Each card has its own frame, so a slightly uneven cut still looks neat.

MADE FOR EARLY READERS
Lowercase labels (capitals only for names like American holly) in a clear, rounded print font with the "a" and "g" children learn to write. Full species names on every card (black-capped chickadee, not just "bird"); long names wrap onto two lines at the same size.

HONEST NOTES
Ages 3-7: pre-readers match pictures, readers match labels, older children read the fact cards. Holly berries can make people sick, so nothing from a walk goes in the mouth. Pine cones, berries and cedar cones are choking-size: keep nature-table finds away from children under 3. Stay off frozen ponds, watch wild animals from a distance, and leave bird nests where they are (most are protected by law, even empty ones). Drawings are simplified for learning and not to scale. Not every object lives everywhere in the US (paper birch, balsam fir, snowshoe hares and wood frogs are northern; holly is eastern and southern; blue spruce grows wild only in the Rockies), so blank cards are included for your own finds. Months on the seasons wheel are for the Northern Hemisphere. Standard 3.5 x 4.5 in cards, so they file neatly with other 3-part card sets.
