One Christmas case, 6 puzzles, one six-letter lock. Print it at home, spread it on the table and work it out. No props, no scissors, no app, no padlocks, and nothing to buy after you have bought this.

Every Christmas, Tamsett's department store in Brindlecote dresses its big corner window behind a curtain and pulls the curtain back with the whole town on the pavement. This year the window is a toymaker's workshop — a clockwork train, a rocking horse, a doll's house, a ring of tinsel — and in the middle, on a plinth of its own, the Tamsett nutcracker: a wooden soldier as tall as a child, carved by the founder. On the morning of the unveiling the plinth is empty. There is a little card where it stood — "Gone to see the other windows. Back for Christmas." — and a line of tiny footprints in the sawdust leading to the hatch at the back of the window. The town is delighted. The owner is not.

She has gone away for the week and locked her notes in the plan chest, behind a lock that takes six letters. Six half-worked sheets out of her folder are on the table.

HOW IT WORKS

Six puzzles, and six different kinds — a logic grid, a word square, a loop to draw through a field of dots, a picture puzzle, a grid of sizes and greater-than signs, and a note written in a zigzag. Each one prints its own rule for reading a single letter off its own answer, and no two of the rules are the same shape: one reads a value out of a finished grid, one is the first letter of the last word of a hidden sentence, one is the first letter of a word caught inside the loop, one is a picture that comes out as a capital letter, one is a letter over a column, and one is the last letter of a word spelled out in ringed boxes. Write the six letters in the six boxes on the Lock Sheet, read them in order, and the plan chest opens.

No puzzle needs the answer to any other puzzle. A table can split up and work in parallel, and the one puzzle nobody at the table likes cannot stop the game.

WHAT'S IN THE FILE

- 6 puzzles on 7 pages (pages 7–13) — one puzzle to a sheet, except the logic grid, which gets its clue list and its grid on facing sheets so both can lie on the table at once.
- The briefing (page 6): the store, the window, the five people who dressed it, and what you are looking for.
- A one-page host guide (page 5). That is the whole of the setting up. There is no script to read aloud and nobody has to act a part.
- The Lock Sheet (page 14) — the board. Six boxes and the rule for putting them together.
- A hint page for every puzzle (pages 15–20), one puzzle to a page, so nobody can see a puzzle they have not reached. Two nudges above a fold line, the answer below it.
- A full walkthrough (pages 21–26): a page per puzzle, showing not just the answer but how the answer is forced, step by step.
- The answer to the case (page 27), and the working (page 28), which names the program that made and checked each puzzle.

MACHINE-CHECKED, NOT CLAIMED

- The logic grid has exactly one solution (counted), an independent brute-force count agrees, a deduction-only solver reaches it without guessing, and no clue is redundant — remove any one of its 11 clues and the case stops having a single answer. No single clue joins the two things the page's rule joins, so the letter cannot be read off one line.
- The word square is put through the generator's own acceptance gate on the finished grid and then searched again, word by word, in all eight directions: each of the 15 listed words is in it once and once only.
- The loop has exactly one solution (counted by the loop generator's own search, which would have stopped at a second), and a solver that uses only pencil-and-paper steps draws the whole of it without guessing. Which squares end up inside it is then worked out twice more, two different ways.
- The picture puzzle is proved unique on its rows, again on its columns, and again by a brute force that tries every filling.
- The greater-than grid has exactly one filling — counted by the generator's search and again by a separate, deliberately plain count — and a pencil-and-paper solver finishes it without guessing. The square the rule reads off is not one of the printed figures.
- The zigzag note is put back together in 250 different zigzags — two lines to ten, every starting point, and every order of the lines for up to four — and only the one the page tells you to use comes out as words.

And the chain itself is checked end to end. A test program solves all six puzzles from the printed page, applies each page's own printed rule to its own solution, and puts the six letters together. Every surname in the cast is six letters long and they all start with different letters, so the answer cannot be guessed off the list of people either.

PRINTING

US Letter, portrait, single-sided, the same margin left and right. Print at 100% / "Actual size" with "Fit to page" off. Black ink on white — there is not one drop of colour anywhere in the file, so a mono laser printer loses nothing. Nothing on any page comes within 0.6 in of a paper edge. Page 3 is a one-page print guide with the ranges: print pages 6–14 and your players have everything they need and nothing that would spoil it.

WHAT YOU MAY DO WITH IT

Print it as often as you like for yourself and your own household, and print copies for one group you run yourself — a classroom, a library or community club, a care-home or day-centre activity session, a youth group, a family gathering. You may not resell or give away the file, sell the printed pages, or put the puzzles into anything you sell. The full licence is page 4 of the PDF.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

- A PDF to print. Not a physical box, not an app, nothing is mailed, no website to log into.
- Not a murder-mystery party kit: there are no roles to act and no host script. This is pencil-and-paper puzzling with a whodunit wrapped round it.
- Not a set of real locks. The "lock" is a page in the file.
- Not editable or fillable on screen. Solve it on paper.
- Not decorated. The Christmas is in the story, not in pictures: inside the file every page is line grids and type, in black ink, like the other three cases.
- One case, not a book of cases. There are three more in the series, each a separate file and a separate purchase: The Armchair Detective Case File — The Ashcombe Hall Affair is the full-length one (nine puzzles, a four-figure safe and a surname, 39 pages); The Armchair Detective Halloween Case — The Bramblewick Lantern Walk is the same size as this one (six puzzles, 28 pages); and The Armchair Detective Starter Case — The Pelham Cup is the short one (three puzzles, 16 pages).
- Not clocked for you. Six puzzles is an evening for most tables, but nobody has sat over it with a clock and we will not print a number we cannot stand behind.

NOBODY IS HURT IN IT

This one is a disappearance with a story laid over it, and the nutcracker is safe at the end. Nothing is described and nothing is shown, and there is nothing in it that would spoil Christmas for a child at the table. Fine for a family gathering and for a classroom.

HOW THIS WAS MADE

The five generated puzzles were made, solved and checked by computer programs written for this series, in the same way a crossword compiler produces a crossword. The case itself — the town, the store, the people, the sentences — was written from the same templates the mystery series uses, with the help of an AI assistant. Page 2 of the file says so in the same words.
