This printable mystery game for adults includes a complete 46-page detective case with suspect files, incident reports and seven locations to investigate. Download The Black Monk in A4 or US Letter and follow the evidence through a fictional historical mystery set in 1709.

A Mother Superior has disappeared. A letter promises revenge, and strange incidents across town point toward a man in a black monk’s robe. Your investigation must uncover who he is, what he has taken and where he is hiding.

For adults. Play solo, with a partner or with friends as an investigating group. You can also play with several investigating teams. Play at your own pace.

Prepare the materials before starting and keep the pages in order. Avoid reading ahead: some information, including the ending and solutions, should only be revealed later.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Read the opening story and case briefing, then review the suspect, incident and location files.
2. Investigate the seven locations in your chosen order. Each location can be visited only once, so take careful notes before moving on.
3. Decide where to spend your three silver coins on optional further inquiries. You cannot investigate every extra lead.
4. Compare your discoveries with the case files and complete your final report: who is the Black Monk, what has he taken and where is he hiding?
5. Read the ending and solution explanations to check your conclusions.

The choices about where to investigate and spend your coins give you decisions to discuss during play. This is one complete case with a fixed solution; once you know the answers, the mystery will no longer offer the same discovery experience.
