DESCRIPTION
Night Travellers at a Cross by László Mednyánszky, around 1880, printed as a gothic forest poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Mednyánszky, a Hungarian baron born in 1852, trained in Munich and Paris and brought the moody landscapes of the French Barbizon painters home with him. He finished this canvas in the early 1880s. Three travellers stop at a wayside cross deep in a dark forest. They bow their heads in prayer under a thin wash of moonlight. The trees tower over them, and the canvas stands almost two and a half metres tall, so the figures feel small and exposed. A cross in the forest appears again and again in his work. For Mednyánszky, it stood for death. The painting hangs in the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.

THE LOOK
Deep forest green, charcoal and silver moonlight. Still, dark and eerie. Suits a hallway, bedroom, study or gothic gallery wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
