Petra is imagined here around 100 CE, alive with movement, trade and monumental rock-cut architecture beneath the warm light of the Jordanian desert.

The view opens through a narrow sandstone passage toward the heart of the city. Caravans, merchants and travelers move along the main route while carved façades rise directly from the surrounding cliffs.

The Treasury dominates the right side of the composition, glowing in warm rose and orange stone. Beyond it, additional façades, colonnades and buildings continue deeper into the valley, giving the scene the scale of a functioning Nabataean city rather than an isolated archaeological monument.

Camels and loaded caravans in the foreground reinforce Petra’s role as a major trading center, while market stalls and crowded streets give the reconstruction a more lived-in atmosphere.

The surrounding mountains are kept visible throughout the composition. Their darker red-brown rock frames the lighter architecture and makes the city feel embedded in the landscape rather than placed in front of it.

“PETRA · 100 CE” sits along the lower edge without interrupting the view. The date places the artwork near the end of the Nabataean period, before Petra was incorporated into the Roman Empire.
